IMPACT OF JET APPARATUS Model FM 01

Sci-tech Impact of Jet Apparatus Model FM 01 has been designed to measure the force generated by the impingement of the jet of water on a stationary object and to demonstrate the principle of linear momentum. The apparatus can be used with the FM100 Hydraulic Bench or any other standard makes of Hydraulic Benches. The Unit can also be connected to any controlled water supply network when a drain is available. The apparatus consists of a Plexiglas cylindrical shell which houses the nozzle and the deflector and enables visualization of flow inside. A jet of water ejected from the nozzle vertically upwards impinges on a target deflector which is carried on the stem extending through the cover. The resulting force lifts the set of dead weights which gives the direct measurement of the jet impact forces. Target deflectors can be changed easily and the apparatus can be leveled. Suitable piping has been provided to drain water from the unit. Five types of target deflectors are provided. As an option, Electronic Balance with Digital Display can be supplied instead of the dead weight system for force measurement and computer compatibility.

Item Description

Forces are developed when a fluid jet impinges on a stationary or moving body according to the principle of linear momentum. Several fluid flow devices utilize the forces generated by the change of momentum. For example, some hydro-electric power plants use jets of water turn Pelton turbines. Also, it is essential to design devices to withstand forces caused by the changes in momentum of fluids. Study of the effect of jet impingement on plane and curved surfaces and hence the forces generated are important for students of Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Engineering.
