FLOATING BODY DISPLACEMENT APPARATUS Model 11A
The Sci-tech Floating Body Displacement Apparatus Model FM 11A is a bench top unit and is designed to familiarize students about buoyancy force on floating bodies and to demonstrate the Archimedes principle. This is an important equipment for the marine, navel architecture, civil, hydraulic and mechanical engineering laboratories of educational institutions. The apparatus consists of a rectangular plastic pontoon with a lateral slide rod fixed at the center. The weight of the pontoon can be varied by changing the adjustable weight fixed on the lateral slide rod. The experiments can be conducted by filling the volumetric tank of the FM100 Hydraulic Bench or any other available standard hydraulic bench models. A plastic volumetric tank with markings of volume in liters and a scale will be supplied for use as a self contained unit. When the pontoon is floated on water in the tank, the displacement volume can be directly measured. Hence the equivalence of the weight of the pontoon along with the adjustable weights and the weight of the displacement volume of the liquid can be demonstrated. The complete unit is manufactured from corrosion resistant material.

Item Description
It is well known that when a floating body is in static equilibrium in the absence of any external forces, the buoyant force must balance the weight of the body. According to the Archimedes principle, the buoyant force on a floating body is equal to the weight of the displaced liquid. Therefore, the buoyant force depends upon density of the liquid and submerged volume of the body or the displaced volume of the liquid.
